Fashion Design

Specialising in tertiary-level art, design and multimedia, this independent institution was established in 1998 to meet the demand for innovative education programs in creative, design-based studies.

The Australian Academy of Design now offers its accredited degree course - the Bachelor of Design Arts, and the Diploma of Fashion Design. Unique to the Academy, these courses are the result of consultations with leading practising professionals, educators and peak bodies. The three-year/part-time equivalent course combines major and sub-major studies in Advertising, Graphic Design, Photo Media and Visual Arts. Since student choices will influence career pathways, the course structure provides flexibility for students to change direction during their studies. The major and sub-major are supplemented with contextual studies in each year of the course. Students may choose up to two elective contextual studies that may be taken at another university. Affiliations with overseas colleges enable students to study on exchange for part of their course. After two years students have the option of exiting with an Associate degree.

Now located at its new Port Melbourne campus, the Academy has developed purpose-built studios, theatre, computer labs and an exhibition gallery for regular exhibitions of professional artists, illustrators, designers and graduating students.

The Academy provides industry-standard equipment and software so students can aim for the quality standards expected of them as professional designers. At the same time, they undertake problem solving without reliance on technology. Students are exposed to contemporary theory and practice in design as a basis for developing critical thinking and philosophical positions.

The Academy’s creative, competitive and cooperative approach suits students who prefer a friendly, supportive learning environment. Class sizes are kept small for highly personalised and thorough tuition and nurturing of individual talents.
