Design

The Australian National University, School of Art is centrally located in Canberra city. The art deco premises are within the ANU Campus on Baldessin Crescent. Students at the School of Art can undertake the full range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in any of the School’s specialist workshops: Ceramics Furniture, Glass, Gold & Silversmithing, Painting, Photography, Media Arts, Printmedia & Drawing, Sculpture and Textiles. Supporting studies are offered in a wide range of areas including environment studies, applied design, computer design, video art, multimedia, book design, drawing, art theory, field studies and professional practice. In addition to supporting studies, students can access ANU courses and facilities enabling flexible personalised study programs. The ANU School of Art has a high international profile. Students can undertake exchanges to other art schools all over the world. Last year over fifty visiting artists from Australia and overseas visited the School to teach, lead workshops and work alongside students.

Class sizes are deliberately kept small to maintain a high standard of teaching and ensure students have easy access to equipment. Staff members are all practising artists with international and national reputations and are dedicated teachers. Workshops are well-equipped studios with individual workspaces, specialist facilities and computer equipment. The School has its own art library which focuses on contemporary art practices. The School is the focus of Canberra’s lively artistic community. Students are encouraged to interact with Canberra’s national collecting institutions such as the National Gallery of Australia, the National Library, Screensound Australia and the National Museum. Students have the opportunity to exhibit work at contemporary art galleries in Canberra including the School’s own Galleries and Photospace.

Diploma of Art
2 years full time/part time equivalent
The Diploma program is normally undertaken on a two-year full-time basis, although part-time study is available in some workshops.
Qualifications for entry to the Diploma vary from workshop to workshop, but in general, the student is expected to have some existing expertise in their specialist area. The course places heavy emphasis on skills acquisition and practical knowledge, and is designed to further a particular area of knowledge in a specific Workshop discipline.
Bachelor of Visual Arts
3 years full time
The three year Bachelor of Visual Arts is available for students who wish to major in one of the disciplines offered at the undergraduate level: Ceramics, Glass, Furniture, Gold & Silversmithing Painting, Photography, Media Arts, Printmedia & Drawing, Sculpture and Textiles. The program includes a semester of Core Studies, followed by practical skills-based project work in the major workshop, general and specific art theory and art history and a range of complementary studio programs.
Bachelor of Visual Arts (Honours)
1 year full time
The Honours program is available to students who complete the 3 year Bachelor of Visual Arts or Design Arts degree with a Distinction average. The program is research based and requires completion of a body or resolved artwork (in any of the workshop specialisations) plus an Honours Studio Report (of 3000-5000 words) outlining the progress, methods and frame of reference of the study.

4 years full time
Combined programs enable students to expand their career options by taking one of a number of programs in conjunction with their studies in the Visual Arts. Employees appreciate the combination of expertise or professional training with a broad educational base.

Graduate Diploma of Art (Visual) (Coursework)
2 semesters full time/part time equivalent
This program aims to provide for advanced study in a 2-semester full time course of study by coursework options. The course of study is based upon approved individual programs together with participation in seminars and related activities. Eligibility - holders of an appropriate undergraduate degree or those with equivalent achievement in a relevant field of professional practice.
Master of Visual Arts (MVA) (Coursework)
1 year full time/part time equivalent
This 48-week coursework degree aims to provide for advanced levels of project work and research in the chosen visual art discipline. Eligibility – holders of a three year pass degree from an Australian University or other such equivalent qualifications. Applicants with extensive professional experience or scholarship may also be considered for admission.
Master of Arts (Visual Arts) (MAVA) (Coursework)
The Master of Arts (Visual Arts) by Coursework degree requires students to complete 16 courses totaling 96 units. The full-time load for one semester’s coursework is four courses (24 units). A candidate’s program may be tailored to meet a variety of interests through structuring a study pathway through a mix of Studio Practice courses, Core and additional Theoretical courses, and Fieldwork and Research courses. Eligibility – holders of a three year pass degree from an Australian University or other such equivalent qualifications. Applicants with extensive professional experience or scholarship may also be considered for admission.
Master of Visual Effects (MVFX) (Coursework)
The Master of Visual Effects is a new creative flagship program aimed at professionals and graduates wishing to advance their creative media experience in the visual effects arena. The MVFX is a one year program designed for people developing their professional experience in the broadcast and production industries, creative design arts and media research. Eligibility - Applicants are expected to have completed an appropriate three year undergraduate qualification at a high level of achievement, and to have demonstrated significant achievement in their area of expertise. They should be able to demonstrate intellectual creativity through evidence of a practice portfolio or showreel, and documentation of written analytical skills. In exceptional circumstances professional experience and proven expertise in the field may be taken as equivalent qualification for admission to the course. There is no provision for advanced standing.
Master of New Media: Arts (Coursework)
1 year full time/part time equivalent
The Master of New Media Arts provides a concentrated study program, by coursework and individual practice over two semesters full-time (or equivalent part-time), in the use of new digital sound and/or image technologies for artistic, commercial or scientific perceptualisation purposes. Whilst developing technical facility, the underlying principle of the program is the development of aesthetic sensibilities in the artistic use of computers.
Students may specialise in 3D Computer Animation, Digital Video, Computer Music, or Interactive Digital Media. Through its affiliation with Graduate Studies in other disciplines opportunities are also provided for interdisciplinary studies. Eligibility - Applicants are expected to have completed an appropriate three year undergraduate qualification at a high level of achievement, to have demonstrated significant achievement in their field of practice, and to possess high level creative, analytical and critical skills. In exceptional circumstances professional experience and standing in the field may be taken as equivalent qualification for admission to the course. There is no provision for advanced standing. Concurrent studies cannot be taken without prior approval, nor can a full-time candidate undertake concurrent full-time employment.
Master of Philosophy (MPhil) (Research)
2 years full time/part time equivalent
The Master of Philosophy by Studio Practice and Sub-thesis mode of study is designed for students who require an advanced research qualification but who want a shorter degree program than the PhD. This degree caters for suitably qualified visual artists to pursue practical and theoretical studies in depth and to develop their practice to a higher artistic and academic level in the particular disciplines offered by the School’s Workshops and Studios. A candidate for this degree is expected to produce work which makes a significant contribution to the discipline, which represents a
substantial development in relation to the candidate’s prior practice, and which demonstrates artistic, intellectual and critical rigour of a high standard.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) (Research)
2-4 years full time/part time equivalent
The PhD in Visual Arts degree by research caters for visual arts graduates or art professionals and offers advanced levels of Studio Practice and theoretical research in the range of disciplines conducted by the School’s Workshops and Studios. Independent research is enhanced by the School’s comprehensive working relationship with national cultural institutions such as the National Gallery of Australia, the National Library of Australia, the National Film and Sound Archive, the Australian War Memorial and the National Museum of Australia.

Bachelor of Design Arts (BDA)
3 years full time
The BDA aims to prepare students for careers as professional designer-makers. The program is offered in the disciplines of Ceramics, Furniture, Glass, Gold & Silversmithing and Textiles. It utilises current digital technology in design development providing an ideal platform for future design professionals. Students undertake Core Studies in Semester 1 with Semesters 2-6 focussing on the relevant Workshop discipline as the major study. This is supported by art and design theory courses and complementary studies including 3D computer modelling and drawing, inkjet printing and rapid prototyping.
Bachelor of Design Arts (Honours)
1 year full time
The Honours program is available to students who complete the 3 year Bachelor Design Arts degree with a Distinction average. The program is research based and requires completion of a body or resolved artwork (in any of the workshop specialisations) plus an Honours Studio Report (of 3000-5000 words) outlining the progress, methods and frame of reference of the study.
Master of Design Arts (MDA)
1 year full time/part time equivalent
The MDA is a 48-week coursework program with a particular emphasis on technical, design and production outcomes. A study program relevant to the design discipline is constructed on an individual basis in one of the Ceramics, Furniture, Glass, Gold & Silversmithing and Textiles Workshops.
