T-post: Wearable Magazines

T-post_neck_print

T-post works a lot like a magazine subscription. Every five weeks, subscribers from over 50 countries receive a new issue/t-shirt in the mail. The offbeat news story is printed on the inside back of the shirt. And a graphic artistʼs interpretation of that news story is printed on the front. For subscribers, the comment “Nice shirt” now becomes an invitation to tell the story behind the design and create dialogue about an interesting world event.
More than just an innovative social brand, T-post is also an environmentally conscience one. To reduce waste, T-post is only sold online to subscribers using the principles of on demand manufacturing, i.e. making only what consumer’s want. Additionally, shirts are sweatshop-free, often organic, and printed with eco-certified inks.

National Condom Tin Competition: Winners Announced

Alex Naghavi from Brisbane and Vladimir Zokic from Canberra, have won a national competition calling on creative young Australians to design a limited edition tin to help make carrying condoms as normal as carrying a mobile phone or keys.

Alex Naghavi

Alex is a talented Designer, Photographer and Illustrator, who entered the competition to not only gain attention for her work, but to make a difference in the lives of thousands of Australian youth. “The intention behind the design was to appeal to both men and women – responsibility goes both ways; so I hope my design helps lessen the embarrassment of carrying around condoms as well as lessen the risks associated with unprotected sex,” said Alex.

Vladimir is an inspired Multimedia and Graphic Designer, who found the competition an exciting challenge creatively and a chance to become involved in a relevant initiative for all Australian youth. “I designed this tin with the intention of people keeping the tin and using it.  I hope my tin will show young people that carrying a condom is ok – in fact it is cool,” said Vladimir.

The two winning designs were selected from an enormous pool of entries by the industry and celebrity judging panel:  dating, sex and relationships commentator Samantha Brett; pop, rock and music sensation Bluejuice; and visual and performing artist Ben Frost.

These two unique, winning designs will now feature on the next set of condom tins that will be distributed around the country.

The competition was part of the National Sexually Transmissible Infections Prevention Program: Sexual Health Campaign to address a significant rise in sexually transmissible infections (STIs). The campaign promotes condoms as one of the best ways to protect against STIs and encourages those who have had unprotected sex to see a doctor about getting tested.

Gorker Gallery – Leah Bartholomew

BARTHOLOMEW_FLYER_FRONT

Leah Bartholomew’s second solo exhibition These are the Days, at Gorker Gallery, 17 – 27 June.

Following the success of her debut solo exhibition Where the Dry Leaves Fall, Leah Bartholomew is set to impress us all with her new body of work.
These are the Days is an intimate exploration of the small, special moment that bind us together in friendship and create a sense of place. The prints, collages and paper sculptures delicately handcrafted by Bartholomew tell the story of a protracted coming of age, anchored in the landscapes of both experience and imagination.

From poetics scenes such as the group of friends lazing in a sun-drenched field, to the bonding of the shared beer in city back streets, to the quiet moment of solitude amongst prismatic trees, these works honour the events and emotions that can seem almost insignificant at the time, but go on to become important memories and dreams. They convey a similar feeling to that of discovering the smell of bonfire on a pair of jeans that you haven’t worn for weeks.

Design Capital
State of Design Festival to explore the future of Victoria’s built environment, mobility systems and digital strategy

The 2010 State of Design Festival’s business program, Design Capital, will focus on how three interrelated areas – the built environment, mobility systems and digital strategies, are helping businesses address the big issues they face in today’s economic climate.
This innovative program comprises seven key events featuring real-life case studies on the importance of design in a sustainable future. With Melbourne’s population growing faster than any other city in Australia, Design Capital will look at new models for urban planning and public and private modes of transportation. Design Capital will also explore the potential for using the vast amount of information on how our cities and businesses operate – currently held by public and private organisations – to improve citizen experiences.

BUILT: RETROFITTING THE GRID
Tuesday 20 July 2010
The biggest issue confronting the creation of sustainable cities is the inefficiency of existing commercial building stock. In this session the panel will discuss the sustainability case for retrofitting existing buildings to improve their environmental performance and the short to medium term gains for property developers, landlords, materials and services suppliers.
Panel members include Rob Murray-Leach, CEO of the Energy Efficiency Council, Ninotschka Titschkosky, Principle Architect of BVN Architecture, and Romilly Madew, CEO of the Green Building Council of Australia.

SUSTAINABLE AND MORE PROFITABLE
Wednesday 21 July 2010
Melbourne is home to a number of innovators who are changing how we design and engineer new buildings. Their research and development affects design and construction processes, the overall sustainability performance of a building and the experience of being in the space. This opportunity to learn about the commercial benefits of sustainable construction and design is not to be missed.
Panel members include: Nonda Katsalidis, Director of Unitised Buildings, Callum Fraser, Director of Elenberg Fraser, Ian Jones, CEO of Vipac, and Dylan Brady, Director of Studio505.

DIGITAL: MAKING THE INVISIBLE VISIBLE
Thursday 22 July 2010
Digital strategies are critical to building brands. This reality is prompting governments, councils and small to large companies to invest in the digital realm. Apple is a pioneer in using the internet to simultaneously educate users about their products while incorporating user feedback to improve their future releases.
Our panel explains how councils through to innovative companies are implementing digital strategies. Panel members include: Dan Hill, Senior Consultant of Arup, Sam Davy, Brand Director of Crumpler and former Global Creative Director of Apple Inc and Dave King, CEO of The Royals.

MOBILITY: THE FUTURE OF PERSONAL EMOTIONAL MOBILITY
Chris Bangle, Chris Bangle and Associates (Italy)
Tuesday 19 July 2010
We want to live in cities admired for their pedestrian-friendly streets and efficient transport corridors. Yet we are constantly challenged getting from A to B and being on the move is plagued with concerns about time, our state of mind and our carbon footprint. How we solve the current issues facing our urban environments is an issue Chris Bangle is passionate about. Bangle’s innovative, highly successful and at times controversial sixteen years at BMW proves he is more than capable of steering change through complex industrial contexts. Bangle will provide his unique insights into current and future trends in mobility, including what will enable and hinder change in new automobiles and his planned role within this emerging world of eco-friendly mobility trends.

Taint

A new exhibition opening at Firstdraft this month explores six contemporary Australian artists’ post-minimalist tendencies.
Artists: Peter Adsett, Gail Hastings, Laressa Kosloff, Pat Macan, Elizabeth Newman, Patricia Todarello.
Exhibition opens: Wednesday 16 June 2010, 6-8pm
Exhibition continues: to 4 July 2010
Artist talks: Sunday 4 July 2010 at 4pm

Taint observes the continued currency of the minimalist project through the disparate approaches of six contemporary Australian artists. The artists explore what could loosely be termed a post-minimalist tendency. Their works borrow from the now historical principles of minimalism, but interrupt and compromise the austere surfaces associated with the movement, subverting what was once a puritanical exercise in form, space, colour and composition.

These artists infuse works with pollutants; humour, domestic reference or emotive content and yet the strength of the works’ aesthetic presence could be said to be indebted to their Minimalist forebears. By enlivening and extending the post-minimalism debate, these works force the principles of the movement into a conversation with the present day, and therefore into the amorphous terrain of the postmodern.

The exhibition seeks to question the affect of revisiting the formal aesthetics of this period; of mimicry, re-enactment and a continued interest in reduction to essential form, to the audience and to their relation to the work.

The Light in Winter, Melbourne

The Light in Winter launched with the unveiling of Solar Equation
by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer
4 June to 4 July, nightly from sunset to midnight in the Main Square, FREE
(Fridays and Saturdays extended hours)

Solar Equation - The Light in Winter - Julie Renouf 4
Solar Equation, The Light in Winter, by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer

The Light in Winter program was launched on 4th June with the spectacular unveiling of Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s world premiere large–scale commission, Solar Equation. A large crowd witnessed the emergence of a new public artwork as five-year-old Tehani Cross from the local Tuvalu and Kiribati community switched on the installation to have the sun rise in an uncanny spectacle.
Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s work is respected by art cognoscenti from all corners of the globe and his first major work in Australia, which was specially commissioned for The Light in Winter, proved a stunning accomplishment that is set to hover over Fed Square until 4 July.

A faithful three dimensional simulation of the sun roughly the size of the Flinders Street Station dome yet 100 million times smaller than the real thing, Solar Equation highlights the beauty and complexity of solar behaviour as recorded by recent astronomical observations. This project seeks to provide a platform for discussion about environmental issues such as drought, conservation and global warming, while presenting a poetic and mysterious backdrop. Solar Equation features solar animations projected on to the world’s largest custom-built spherical balloon
generated by live mathematical equations that simulate the turbulence, flares and sunspots on the sun’s surface. These animations produce a constantly changing display that never repeats itself and can be manipulated with a free downloadable application that can be used on iphones, ipads and the ipod touch to control movements in real time.

Directed by Robyn Archer, The Light in Winter is a month-long celebration of light, enlightenment and shared cultural experiences, with a free program of concerts, film screenings, light-based artworks, exhibitions, forums and the much-loved Solstice Celebration on 19 June.
