Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) presents Shaun Gladwell: Stereo Sequences, a major new commission of works by the London-based Australian artist, Shaun Gladwell, on until 14 August, 2011.

“Shaun Gladwell has an enviable international reputation as one of Australia’s leading video artists and we are thrilled to be presenting his latest stunning series of works,” said ACMI Director, Tony Sweeney. “This significant new commission reflects our strong commitment to supporting Australian artists, both established and emerging, and the ongoing development of contemporary moving image art practice in this country.”

Shaun Gladwell: Stereo Sequences was conceived and created for ACMI’s unique subterranean gallery and features a series of multi-screen video works that explore concepts of duality, parallels and mirroring.

Using filmic devices such as long pans and slow-motion, Gladwell captures tightly choreographed, repetitive performances by classical ballerinas, helicopters, motorcycles, muscle cars, trials bike-riders and skateboarders. Gladwell’s latest offerings radiate a distinct Australian sensibility, inspired by our unique landscape and local film culture, including Ozploitation era films.

in 2011.

IA members comprise of some of the top illustrative talent in Australia today, and they have produced an amazing array of artwork for this group show. Last year’s exhibition showcased over 120 images, and this year’s show will prove to be just as diverse. Coming from a range of industries – including fashion, book publishing, advertising and editorial – there is truly something for everyone.

All prints are professionally produced on 300gsm archival watercolour paper, open editioned, and available for $125 each with all proceeds going to the artists.

Australia’s premier design exhibition DESIGN:MADE:TRADE returns for its fourth consecutive year in 2011.

Applications are now open for Australia’s leading furniture, fashion and industrial design brands to take part in this year’s exhibition held at the Royal Exhibition Building from Thursday 21 to Sunday 24 July 2011.

Launching the State of Design Festival (20 – 31 July 2011), DESIGN:MADE:TRADE will feature a program of workshops, talks, exhibitions and displays with a focus on driving strong industry attendance to foster business networks and sales opportunities.

Midori Mitamura is a Tokyo based artist who creates installations that combine photography and video, text, found materials and everyday objects gathered while travelling. Mitamura’s exhibition Art & Breakfast, Melbourne will be developed during a three month period as visiting artist in residence at Monash University.

Art & Breakfast is an ongoing project that has previously taken form in Stockholm, Tokyo and Berlin (2006-10). The project begins each morning with the artist making breakfast to eat together with gallery visitors. Mitamura then spends time in the exhibition space, creating and rearranging a series of small improvised installations each day. These temporary handmade installations reflect the transient nature of memory and emotional experience. This exhibition framework makes for an intimate exchange, whereby atmosphere, open-ended possible narratives and a kind of everyday mise-en-scene are built and shared between artist and visitor.

Sydney Opera House today announced the program for Vivid LIVE 2011, curated by Stephen Pavlovic of Modular.
Vivid LIVE at Sydney Opera House (May 27 – June 5) is part of Vivid Sydney (May 27 – June 13), the city’s annual festival of light, music and ideas.  Vivid LIVE celebrates Sydney as a leader in the field of the creative and cultural industries both nationally and throughout the region.

Each year, Vivid LIVE asks a different artist or individual to curate a program of events in and around the world’s most iconic venue.
Following Brian Eno’s debut festival in 2009, Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson brought their unforgettable downtown New York vibe to Sydney in 2010.  This year local music industry legend Stephen ‘Pav’ Pavlovic, founder of the hugely successful Sydney-based record label, touring company and international brand Modular, brings fresh Australian eyes to this growing international festival.

LMFF National Graduate Showcase

Collections from 12 of Australia’s most impressive fashion graduates, from University of Technology QLD, University of Technology NSW, Curtin University WA and RMIT VIC, were put on show as part of the L’oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival.

So much excitement comes from seeing work from such new and refreshing designers. The evening was filled with an atmosphere not alike any of the other events. Each collection was spectacular, and the audience was completely taken by the evident passion of each designer expressed wholly in their work.

Graduates featured: Ana Diaz, Celene Bridge, Genevieve Kulesza, Jason Hewitt, Jennifer Chua, Jennifer Nebel, Jessica O’Connor, Kate Sala, Kate Watson, Laura Anderson, Sangeeta Singh & Sarah Mok.

We look forward to seeing what these young designers will produce in the future, which should be great things, judging by these stunning collections.

Special children’s edition of Craft Hatch promises treats good enough

The March Craft Hatch features more than 20 designers presenting work that celebrates the child in all of us. Staged at the State Library of Victoria, this special edition compliments the Library’s exhibition Look! The art of Australian picture books today.

Visitors to the market will discover Fiona Smith’s label Odd One Out. Working almost exclusively in felt, Odd One Out specialises in food-themed creations. Trained as a visual merchandiser, Smith was drawn to felt for its colourful qualities. “I’m very attracted to bright colours and kitschy things, I have a big collection of cotton fabric but felt really provides the texture, body and thickness for the food range”.

Odd One Out’s customers fall mostly into two groups – those looking for items to incorporate into children’s tea sets or play time, and those wanting to decorate a feature piece of crockery or service ware. Her food theme range includes sandwiches, biscuits, donuts, cake and pizza (sold whole or by the slice!).

Shoppers will also be able to enjoy a guided tour of the Look! exhibition by curator Mike Shuttleworth, starting at 2pm. The one hour tour is suitable for families and children.

Henrik Olesen Presents New Works at MoMA
For His First U.S. Solo Museum Exhibition

NEW YORK, February 7, 2011—For Projects 94: Henrik Olesen, on view February 9 through May 23, 2011, The Museum of Modern Art presents new works by Berlin-based artist Henrik Olesen (Danish, b. 1967) made specifically for this presentation. Olesen’s past projects have addressed a range of subjects, including legal codes, the natural sciences, distribution of capital, and art history. For his first solo museum exhibition in the United States, the artist has gathered disassembled electronic devices mounted on large Plexiglas panels, found-object sculptures, and text-based collages, which together exemplify the range of his practice. Linking this group of works is the relationship of the body and the machine, undergoing what he calls “production, reproduction, and self-production.” Olesen has a longstanding interest in the obsession of early modern artists, such as the Dadaists and Surrealists, with the transformation and proliferation of bodies, machines, and systems. In this group of works, he hints at the possibility of liberation from the body, proposing an alternative conception of existence. The installation’s combination of words and objects, which waver between personal and anonymous, reflect Olesen’s view of the state of the body in technological, capitalist societies of the present day. Projects 94 is organized by Doryun Chong, Associate Curator, Department of Painting and Sculpture, The Museum of Modern Art. The Elaine Dannheisser Projects series is coordinated by Kathy Halbreich, Associate Director, The Museum of Modern Art.

Danny Frommer, Fluffy Transmission

The mechanical and the handmade combine in kinetic sculpture.

Fluffy Transmission is a new installation combining the soft and somewhat organic forms of pom-poms with the mechanically limited motion of a rotary transmission system. This ‘machine’ has not been assembled as a means toward an end goal, but rather to reflect on how machines operate and the values inherent in them. The cyclical forms in Fluffy Transmission unify to create a kind of temporal mandala.

Danny Frommer’s practice spans a variety of art forms including painting, photography, sculpture and installation. His work explores how mechanisms, machines, and representations can transmit and mould forces, material, motion and energy in order to impart ideas and sensations.  More recently he has produced kinetic pieces that reflect on the relationship between the body and the machine; the machine-made and the hand crafted.

Frommer’s machines are often made out of recycled or found materials, or objects that are not usually considered as mechanical components. Frommer holds a Bachelor of Visual Arts from ANU, has undertaken numerous residencies and is currently completing a Certificate III in Engineering Studies at NMIT.

Fluffy Transmission will be opened by Helen Hughes, writer and curator.
