Lee Bul – From Me, Belongs To Only You
4 February – 27 May, 2012
Mori Art Museum 53F Ropponngi Hills Mori Tower

Since the 1990s, Lee Bul has built an international career as one of the leading contemporary artists from Asia. Her oeuvre is dominated by sculptures that demonstrate a mastery of materials and techniques, including her celebrated Cyborgs and Anagrams series, hybrid machine-and-organic forms referencing critical theory as well as dystopian cinematic worlds; karaoke “pods” that evoke space capsules for eternal sleep; and glittering, spectral gures and cityscapes that seem to be falling into ruin. For over twenty years, it could be said that Lee, whose practice has spanned her home country’s transition from military dictatorship to democracy, has been on a quest for an elusive something . the ultimate physical form perhaps, or the ideal society. While showcasing her major works in the four sections “Ephemeral Presence,” “Beyond Human,” “Utopia and Dreamscape” and “From Me, Belongs to You Only,” in the “Studio” section this exhibition will present the drawings and models that also form the font of her ideas. The subtitle “From Me, Belongs to You Only” is also a message from Lee: her attempt to find the “something” for which she is constantly searching in a personal relationship with each individual viewer. Come and experience that message for yourself in the spaces at “Lee Bul: From Me, Belongs to You Only.”

Tom Blachford’s exhibition Aotearoa is comprised of carefully selected photos taken across three trips to New Zealand, where he explored the rich and surreal landscapes. The environment is represented in an abstract way to allow the viewer to define their own interpretation of these pristine areas.

Blachford first discovered his passion for photography whilst studying business at RMIT. He then deferred his degree to pursue photography whole heartedly. He has since worked on major campaigns for MTV New York and United Colours of Benetton, traveled with one of the world’s greatest street artists and been published in Magazines around the world.

Despite being born in the United States, and of Japanese descent, it is the vibrant city energy and graffiti culture of his home town São Paulo that has played the most distinctive role in developing Yusk Imai’s artistic vision.

Yusk represents the vanguard of a new generation of emerging Brazilian artists. His style transcends that of the hackneyed, commonplace street art often seen gracing street and gallery walls, and is the very reason that he is universally considered a unique character.

Yusk’s works are emotionally rich with spiritual messages and ask questions about human nature, our aspirations and our identity. His fine motifs and distinctive palette are an unquestionable nod to the masters of Art Nouveau.

Electromagnetic Guitars is an HD video projection featuring modern pop culture’s greatest success story, the electric guitar. Backed with the strangely familiar sound of electromagnetic radiation that echoes ever present, the piece brings the new commonplace commodity of the mobile to the stage of music fame and lets it play a song. Due to the proliferation of electronic devices such as the mobile phone in everyday life, we are not often distanced from these sounds majorly unheard… they lie just out of reach from our gamut of perception, but here in Electromagnetic Guitars they are put out on display.

The Miscellaneous Interventions include a series of monochrome thermal prints that line the gallery walls. These curious abstracted images framed in laminated wood and gold give a sense of the nostalgia whilst concurrently transcending the everyday experience that would normally evoke reminiscence. The images contain secrets, complimenting the video in linking the commonplace to the extraordinary.

Biography
Hugh Davis (born 1985) is a Melbourne based artist whose work deals with a personal relationship and respect for technology that simultaneously disregards technology’s perceived aura. In 2002 he formed the Dirty Mits, a Punk band that would last five years and tour internationally. In creating the group’s persona and imagery, Hugh honed a DIY ethic to image creation that would extend into his approach towards media, technology and the arts. He completed a BA (Multimedia) with honours in 2005 and explored community radio, television, animation, publishing, music and design before focusing on his artistic practice in 2008. In 2010, Hugh completed the Postgraduate Diploma of Visual Arts at the VCA, is currently a candidate for the Master of Visual Arts, and has begun to exhibition locally in 2011.

Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) presents Shaun Gladwell: Stereo Sequences, a major new commission of works by the London-based Australian artist, Shaun Gladwell, on until 14 August, 2011.

“Shaun Gladwell has an enviable international reputation as one of Australia’s leading video artists and we are thrilled to be presenting his latest stunning series of works,” said ACMI Director, Tony Sweeney. “This significant new commission reflects our strong commitment to supporting Australian artists, both established and emerging, and the ongoing development of contemporary moving image art practice in this country.”

Shaun Gladwell: Stereo Sequences was conceived and created for ACMI’s unique subterranean gallery and features a series of multi-screen video works that explore concepts of duality, parallels and mirroring.

Using filmic devices such as long pans and slow-motion, Gladwell captures tightly choreographed, repetitive performances by classical ballerinas, helicopters, motorcycles, muscle cars, trials bike-riders and skateboarders. Gladwell’s latest offerings radiate a distinct Australian sensibility, inspired by our unique landscape and local film culture, including Ozploitation era films.

Two months of Diana Madness is about to land in Australia and New Zealand.

Hosted once every few years, the Lomography World Congress is responsible for uniting Lomographers from all over the world that share one common interest an immense love for analogue photography.

Lomography is not just about crazy fun cameras and beautiful photos, but is also about bringing people together to share their life and experience through this medium, exploring new possibilities both in life and through photography. These completely unique experiences and memories seem to be the best souvenirs for Lomographers who participated in the Lomography World Congress but unfortunately, very few Lomographers from around the world are able to participate due to distance, cost and busy Lomographic lives! Since the last LWC, Lomography has made it a new mission to bring unique Lomographic events and happenings to the community worldwide…Bring on The Diana World Tour!

The Diana World Tour was kick started in Hong Kong, and has since travelled to Tokyo, Seoul, Porto, Lisbon, Madrid, Barcelona, Berlin, Paris, Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, New York City, LA, Riga, London and is now making it’s way to Australia and New Zealand.

Special children’s edition of Craft Hatch promises treats good enough
to eat.

The March Craft Hatch features more than 20 designers presenting work that celebrates the child in all of us. Staged at the State Library of Victoria, this special edition compliments the Library’s exhibition Look! The art of Australian picture books today.

Visitors to the market will discover Fiona Smith’s label Odd One Out. Working almost exclusively in felt, Odd One Out specialises in food-themed creations. Trained as a visual merchandiser, Smith was drawn to felt for its colourful qualities. “I’m very attracted to bright colours and kitschy things, I have a big collection of cotton fabric but felt really provides the texture, body and thickness for the food range”.

Odd One Out’s customers fall mostly into two groups – those looking for items to incorporate into children’s tea sets or play time, and those wanting to decorate a feature piece of crockery or service ware. Her food theme range includes sandwiches, biscuits, donuts, cake and pizza (sold whole or by the slice!).

Shoppers will also be able to enjoy a guided tour of the Look! exhibition by curator Mike Shuttleworth, starting at 2pm. The one hour tour is suitable for families and children.

Also exhibiting at the March Craft Hatch are: Ferrit, Joey Nomad, Little Paper Cloud, Love Rosie Clarke, m2matiz, Made by Mosey, Meg Kolac, Mr Moo, Greswell Forest Bears, Porcelain Womb, Sister Outlaws, So Little Time Co., Milk & Cookies, Tamptation, Teddy Bears Wednesday, The Dusty Caravan & Earth Die Screaming, Two Layers of Cells & Zooblast.

Craft Hatch markets are presented by Craft Victoria on the second Saturday of every month, 11am-4pm.
